How it all began

Sue Mullett, founder of Bath Botanics Ltd, is a qualified Medical Herbalist (BSc) and distiller with a deep-rooted passion for botanicals and their therapeutic potential. Her journey began with a fascination for the history and benefits of bitters and herbal aperitifs, inspiring her to experiment with crafting her own herbal infusions and tinctures. By steeping carefully selected botanicals in alcohol, she explored both their complex flavours and their traditional medicinal qualities.

What started as a personal pursuit soon gained wider appreciation. After sharing her creations with friends and family, Sue recognised a gap for a locally crafted botanical spirit made with exceptional ingredients — something to be savoured on its own and to serve as a foundation for her herbal formulations.

Drawing on her scientific background, Sue taught herself the art of distillation, refining her techniques through extensive experimentation with a diverse range of botanicals. When developing her signature gin, she began with over 30 recipes. Through a rigorous process of blind tastings, she meticulously refined the blend to a single, perfectly balanced expression: No. 1 Gin.

Bath Botanical Apothecary and Distillery is inspired by the rich heritage of aperitifs, digestifs, bitters and spirits — traditions rooted in both enjoyment and wellbeing. Today, this philosophy is reflected in a distinctive collection of high-quality, small-batch creations, including seasonal fruit gins, the Botanical No. 1 Gin, cocktail bitters and herbal elixirs.
